Bon Appetit: The New Cooking Channel

A brand new cable network, Cooking Channel, launched on May 31, 20120. The spin-off from Food Network was created to take over for Fine Living Network. After watching the new channel for a few days, I soon realized that the programming reminds me of the old adage “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.

Something Old

Julia Child; Galloping Gourmet Graham Kerr; Iron Chef (Japan)
Rachel Ray’s Travel and Taste shows
Everyday Italian, Giada De Laurentis
Drink Up; Spice Goddess

Something New

'Indian Food Made Easy,' 'Chinese Food Made Easy' and 'French Food At Home'
Roger Mooking, Everyday Exotic, obedient ingredient
Chuck’s Day Off (reminiscent of Tyler Florence)
David Rocco’s Dolce Vita
Rachel Allen: Bake!

Something Borrowed

Foreign programs, i.e. Nigella Lawson, Jamie Oliver
“At the Table With” parallels Food Network's “Chefography”
Mo Rocca's Food(ography)' which reminded me of Alton Brown’s Show.

Something Blue

Missing in action: Lacked Southern cooking and American Regional cuisine. My God, no Paula Deen, Pat and Gina Neeley, or Barefoot Contessa!

Coming Attractions-Fall 2010

Many of the Food Network's top stars - Emeril Lagasse, Rachael Ray and Bobby Flay - will have new programs on the channel starting in the fall of 2010.

Emeril Lagasse's new show, called Emeril's Fresh Food Fast, will show viewers how fresh food can be prepared in a minimal amount of time without sacrificing taste. Bobby Flay's new program Brunch @ Bobby's will focus on weekend brunches, and Rachael Ray's show Week In a Day will show viewers how to plan a week's menu by cooking them all in a single day.

Cooking Channel offers alternate viewing for fans of cooking shows. It provides Food Network fans with a little diversity and a change of pace over a twenty-four hour time frame. My advice to management: keep working on developing quality programs, add more super star power with beloved established personalities, and create a few shows which are unique to Cooking Channel without using the Food Network show formula. Only time will render the final verdict.

Stay Hungry and Bon Appetit!
