Sherlock Holmes Trivia and New Adventures

"Sherlock"-Benedict Cumberbatch and Mark Freeman

I've been watching the BBCs offering "Sherlock", the adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson set in 21st Century London.  The series is a thrilling, funny, fast-paced contemporary remake of Arthur Conan Doyle's classic.  The co-creator and writer of the series promises you'll find Holmes and Watson "living, breathing, modern men". Personally, I recommend the series for those who like to test their powers of deduction.

While Benedict Cumberbatch plays Sherlock as brilliant, aloof, and almost entirely lacking in social graces, we probably most remember Basil Rathbone in the role.  Newer adventures with Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law are more physical than the original, but it's Sherlock's mind that has thrilled us through the ages and no one did it better than Rathbone.  so let's "return to those thrilling days of yesteryear" and renew our memories of the original character and his stories.

Here's a trivia quiz to test your knowledge of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's creation and other characterizations through the years:

What is the name of the first story in which Sherlock Holmes appears?

In 1899, an American stage actor popularized the image of Holmes.  Name the two signature trademarks of the character he used.

Name the 1939 film in which Basil Rathbone first appeared as Sherlock Holmes in 1939.

Name the 1956 Looney Tunes classic featuring Daffy Duck as Dorlock Homes and Porky Pig as Watkins.

Sesame Street featured this character based on Sherlock Holmes in 1970. The character often was the culprit in his own investigations and became a fixture on the show.

Hugh Laurie’s character on the television show “House” shares this address with Sherlock Holmes.

Barry Levinson’s original story of Holmes and Watson at boarding school is presented in this 1985 film.

Irene Adler appeared only once in the works about Sherlock Holmes.  In which offering did she appear?

Who is Holmes’ most notable nemesis?

The original Holmes character was an expert in what two fields of study?

Good Luck.  Look for the answers in a future post.

  1. Nice to meet a Sherlockian!

I would recommend the Russian adaptation with Vasily Livanov as Sherlock Holmes.

Livanov makes a great Holmes and Vitaly Solomin is in my humble opinion, the definitive Watson.

    Cheers!
